Ruth Elliott was born in Sheffield, England.

Having developed a keen interest in art, fashion, literature and film from an early age she was encouraged to engage in her own fine art practice.

In 2010 Ruth helped organize Sheffield’s first ‘Temporary Autonomous Arts’ event. In which local artists, poets, writers, performance artists and musicians were invited to make a contribution to a three day event as part of a week long residency. The ‘Temporary Autonomous Arts’ event which was founded on the principle of free creative practice was held in an abandoned garage in a part of Sheffield famous for its industrial past.

In 2011 Ruth studied dressmaking and pattern cutting in Sheffield as a way of expanding her awareness of craft and technique. This engagement with skill, especially with regards to embroidery and tailoring has been an ongoing part of the artist’s practice. This has been reiterated during her time at Sheffield Hallam University where Ruth is currently in the process of obtaining a BA in Fine Art (2011-present).

As part of a group show in 2012 Ruth showed her pencil drawing ‘Untitled (Line)’ at the S1 Gallery in Sheffield’s city centre.

Her latest exhibition, ‘The Knowledgeable Body’ (March 2013) was held at the Creative Arts Development Space (CADS) in Sheffield. All eight artists involved created vastly different work all presenting a different interpretation of the mind or body. Ruth was asked to write the Catalogue introduction in which she explains the efforts made by the group to present a selection of informed, intellectual approaches to the body in the form of ‘both the fleshy, physical outer shell and the often incomprehensible mind’.

Ruth is currently planning this year’s ‘New Kids on the Art Block’ (July 2013). An exhibition which aims to demonstrate the options available to young people wishing to enter into a creative field. This will be the exhibition’s second year and will be held once again at King Edward VII school in Sheffield. Featuring work by a range of ex-students who are all currently involved in art, fashion, architecture, graphic design, film or dance.

Plans are also being made in relation to an exhibition in part of Sheffield’s Castle Market.
