Short

My work is focused around the state of being numb. Not just on an emotional level, but physically and as a cultural situation. I aim to simultaneously recreate and counteract aspects of numbness by focusing the viewer’s attention on intricate detailing, presenting unknown subject matter and through the use of white or empty space.

Extended

Each object depicted in my pencil drawings and embroidery are taken from a factual narrative concerned with the idea. The origin and nature of the object is kept purposely hidden from the viewer who often begin to attempt to categorize or explain what is shown before them. By using layers of detail in my work I aim to give the viewer the ability to reevaluate the possible depth and interest within all things regardless of their obvious connotations. This could be from a physical, contextual or even philosophical viewpoint.  Something which could have been originally ignored or dismissed has been renewed with a different type of interest, therefore acting against the unconcerned, lethargic state that is numbness.

I use white and negative space alongside the detailing as an imitation of physical unconsciousness and to make reference to relevant personal experiences. I utilize the whiteness and  light of a classic white cube setting as a way to heighten the experience, aiming for something close to snow blindness. This has been described by viewers as being ‘uncomfortable, scary and trapping’ as well as ‘paranoid, anxious or melancholic.’ When the work manages to inspire a reaction in the viewer (be it either positive or negative) it is once again acting to counteract disinterest and unfeeling and stimulate sensation.
